A Taste of Greece Festival Irvine

“As Orange County’s largest Greek Orthodox congregation, we are delighted to host a festival that offers an opportunity for the community to experience authentic Greek dining, wine, music, dancing and entertainment,” said Father Steven Tsichlis, Pastor at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church. “This year’s festival, our 41st annual, will offer something for everyone with a variety of Greek-themed activities, and tours of the Church to view the beautiful sanctuary that contains Christian artwork done in mosaic patterned after ancient prototypes that are unique in Orange County.”

A family-friendly affair, the festival will offer free Greek dance lessons throughout the weekend, a variety of boutique shops, and feature a free Children’s Play Zone. Event attendees can also enter an opportunity drawing for the chance to win one of five premiere prizes. About St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church
St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church began in 1977 when a handful of people took the initiative to organize a new Greek Orthodox Church in Orange County.  Today the church is flourishing with large youth and senior citizens programs, modern Greek language classes for children and adults, a bookstore and a beautiful sanctuary filled with mosaic artwork. The church places an emphasis on “Philoptochos” – also the name of the church philanthropic group – a Greek word meaning “love for the poor,” by supporting Kids ‘N’ Cancer; an orphanage for boys outside Tijuana, Mexico; digging wells for villages in Africa; building churches and providing medical supplies for church run clinics and hospitals in Tanzania; and much more.  For more information, visit www.stpaulsirvine.org or call (949) 733-2366.

A Visit to Silvas Fresh Eatery

I have always wanted to check out Silva’s Fresh Eatery + Churrascaria in South Coast Metro, so when I was invited to a media tasting last week, I was excited to visit. The restaurant offers a variety of slow-grilled churrascaria meats, salads and side dishes.

This eatery opened last year and is close to South Coast Plaza and I was excited to check it out. It has modern decor and a cozy bar in the corner.

Silvas Fresh Eatery

They have a happy hour mid-week so my husband and I ordered a strawberry and mango caipirinha. They offer a nice selection of handcrafted cocktails, wines, and beer. Our caipirinhas did not disappoint and were delicious and refreshing.

silvas caipririnha

The Churrascaria is set up a little differently than some of the others I have been to in that it is all served buffet style. You can choose from several options and go through the buffet line where you will find fresh seasonal organic salads and side dishes to go along with your servings of the slow-grilled meats.

ratatouille

There are several options for the buffet. You can order dinner for $26.95 for all you can eat or you can choose the one time through for $15.95. The lunch buffet is $ 22.95 with a power lunch special during limited hours Tuesdays through Thursdays for $15.95.

For the main course, the Picanha (Top Sirloin) was perfect, as was the Tri-Tip and Skirt Steak. The meat dishes I had were SO GOOD, I did not even add the Chimichurri sauce that is available. The menu also features other meats such as pork ribs, lamb, salmon, and chicken.

Picanha meat silvasI sampled a few sides with my meal including the Broccolini with grapes, the Feiajo Jalo (pinto beans with onion and garlic), the Ratatouille and the Biro-Biro rice. All were delicious side dishes that I recommend you try if you visit.

We truly were very happy with our meal and decided to share the Passion Fruit Mousse. It was a nice way to end our meal.

Silva’s offers catering and private event service as well. Be sure to bookmark this page and check them out.

Note that this eatery is located behind the Von’s as some of the map apps will have you wondering exactly where this is once you are in the shopping center.

It is a family friendly restaurant, but if you are planning to go on the weekends, I suggest making reservations as it is very popular. Silva’s does offer a kids menu.

Check out their happy hour Mondays – Thursdays from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

Hells Kitchen Las Vegas

A look at my most recent visit to Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen Las Vegas. I am a fan of the show and I finally checked out the restaurant that opened last year. I am also sharing a few tips for you if you are planning a visit.

Hells Kitchen sidn

The world’s first Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen restaurant opened last year at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Inspired by the hit reality television show starring Chef Gordon Ramsay, this was described as a place where guests will feel like they are on the studio set.

l recently visited the restaurant while in Las Vegas.

Hells Kitchen entrance

The restaurant is located in front of Ceasar’s Palace. When you walk in, you can feel the energy of the eatery and its staff and patrons.

Hells Kitchen Las Vegas Bar

The bar was full when we checked in for our dinner reservation. You are first greeted by a video of Gordan Ramsey and a wall full of photos of Hell’s Kitchen alumni from the television show.

The restaurant is large and open and you can in fact see the chefs in the in the familiar red and blue kitchen.

hells kitchen restaurant vegas

We were seated in a lovely table next to the window, overlooking the fountains in front of Caesar’s Palace. The menu offerings included many options including two Prix Fixe options (one of which came with a wine pairing).

Hells Kitchen

We started with the Lobster Risotto and were not disappointed. The lobster was high quality and wonderfully cooked over a bed of creamy risotto. Such a great way to start the meal and perfect when shared. You can order the risotto with or without truffles.

Hells Kitchen Lobster Risotto

We debated about trying the Prix Fixe menu, but when it came to deciding I could not help but order the signature dish, the Beef Wellington. The Wellington was absolutely wonderful with a thin, flakey crust and superior flavor.

The Wellington only comes medium rare, so do not even try to order it any other way. And why would you?

The dish was served with a potato puree and a  couple of unmemorable carrots.

Hells Kitchen Beef Wellington

At the suggestion of our server, we ordered  the Pineapple Carpaccio which was a perfect light way to end the meal. It is served with a dry ice container which makes for a fun and Instagram-worthy presentation.

Hells Kitchen dessert

The food and service at the restaurant was top notch. Truly worth a visit if you are in the Las Vegas area. The restaurant was a wonderful dining experience and I would definitely recommend you checking it out.

Tips for Visiting Hell’s Kitchen Las Vegas

The restaurant takes walk-ins, but you are better off trying to get in for a late lunch as dinner is a  pretty popular time at the restaurant.

While we did not see Gordon Ramsey at this meal, he does visit the restaurant about three times a year.  They do have a day of filming planned at this location in March.

We did catch a glimpse of Michelle Tribble, winner of season 17 in the kitchen. The transition to season 18 winner Ariel Contreras-Fox was to take place sometime this month, according to our sources.

Hells Kitchen Las Vegas Chef

If the price tag is a bit steep, try visiting at lunchtime for a lower-priced menu.

Brew Ho Ho! Holiday Ale Festival

The Annual Brew Ho Ho! Holiday Ale Festival is coming to Orange County.

orange county brew hoho

The 7th Annual Brew Ho Ho Holiday Ale Festival will be here on December 8, 2018. This event will be held in the garden gazebo area of the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. The beer festival will run from 12-4 p.m and if it is anything like last year’s event, it will be a phenomenal festival.

This sell-out event comes courtesy of the Brew Ha Ha Productions team, who continue to develop the most acclaimed beer festivals in the United States.

The Brew Ho Ho! Holiday Ale Festival, dubbed OC’s favorite festival in the craft beer community, offers a festive, intimate experience with one-of-a-kind, rare and limited release holiday beers. Beer aficionados and admirers alike will gather to sample over 100 craft beers from the finest local and national breweries.

Of the many exciting seasonal beers offered at Brew Ho Ho! is “Beard Envy,” a collaboration beer named in honor of Brew Ha Ha Productions founder, Cameron Collins’ signature beard and how envious he and Brian Giesen of Docent Brewing in San Juan Capistrano are of Santa’s epic beard. The beer, an imperial stout that incorporates toasted pecans and coconut, is layered with Simpsons Malt, balanced with chocolate wheat, brewed with Magnum Hops and boiled for two hours to create a distinct festive flavor. The collaboration beer will be the first-ever canned release for Docent Brewing.

“The great thing about Brew Ho Ho,” says Brew Ha Ha Productions founder, Cameron Collins, “is that all the breweries that come out bring their very best, with a variety of rare beers that you don’t see at other events. That is what defines this festival and why we are so excited to partner with Docent Brewing to create such a unique beer for the event.”

In true Brew Ho Ho! tradition, festivities will also include live music and dancing. The Gabba Gabba Hey’s, a Ramones tribute band, will be performing the punk rock group’s classic hits. Fast Times, the ultimate 80s’ tribute band, will also be performing classic 80s’ hits for attendees to enjoy as they sip their seasonal beers.

Back by popular demand, the annual Brewery Merchandise Expo returns, offering guests a one-stop shopping experience perfect for stuffing the stockings of fellow beer lovers. Santa will be onsite, trading in his milk and cookies for craft brews and taking photos with enthusiastic attendees. Have a jolly good time with tasty food trucks, fine cigars, interactive games, ugly Christmas sweaters, decorated beards and plenty of holiday beers.

Brew Ha Ha Productions and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and Inland Empire have a successful and growing relationship working events together resulting in tens of thousands of dollars to the charity each year.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters improve the lives, in dramatic ways of over 2,700 local children each year. https://www.ocbigs.org/#

Tickets are on sale now for $55 online, and pending availability will be available the day of for $65 online or at the door.  Designated driver tickets will be available for those accompanying a paid guest. Unlimited tastings will be provided in a complimentary commemorative tasting cup. Tastings will take place from 12 – 4 p.m. with the Brewery Merchandise Expo, music and food open until 5 p.m.  Brew Ho Ho! is a 21+ only, rain or shine event. OC Wine Fest 2018

It was all fun and wine at the OC Wine Fest 2018!

Wines at OC Wine Fest 2018

The first ever OC Wine Fest kicked off on a slightly damp Saturday last weekend, but that did not stop anyone from having a good time.  The event provided a multitude of wines in a casual and comfortable outdoor setting. Based at the Stone’s Throw winery, many people came out to drink wine, beer and enjoy some tasty bites.

OC Wine Fest 2018

Local wineries such as Rancho Capistrano Winery were there to pour delicious varietals. Their winery is a gem and a favorite of mine.

We had a chance to meet the proprietors of Cowboy Canyon Winery. After listening to their story and hearing about the winery’s upcoming events made me wonder how I have not been to a tasting there there yet. Their wines were divine and the winery sounds like itis in a beautiful setting in Silverado Canyon. We are adding it to the list to visit.

The folks at Wedell Winery had a nice sampling to offer that day, and did I mention it was unlimited pours? This central coast winery offered some wonderful Pinots and Syrahs and their wines are available in many restaurants and wine stores in Southern California.

The day of discovery continued as we had a chance to try Orange County-based Color Wine.  At the helm is Parker Theo, a twenty-five year old entrepreneur whose started making wine as a project. The name comes from the fact that the first thing you do in a wine tasting is to check the color of the wine, according to Parker. The Rosé  I tasted was lovely and refreshing!

Besides the nearly three dozen wineries, there were cider vendors and breweries as well.

Wine seminars were also available both days of the festival. There were also vendors with wine-related merchandise and I really wanted to take this sculpture home!

The first every OC Wine Fest was a great success and a lovely experience.  Proceeds from this inaugural event helped raise awareness for the OC Wine Fest’s charitable partner, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
